ESOCS Devotional 21 March 2024 – No Hopeless Situation
MEMORY VERSE: “And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.” Matthew 9:26 KJV
TEXT: MATTHEW 9:18 – 26
While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.
19 And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples.
20 And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:
21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.
22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.
23 And when Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise,
24 He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn.
25 But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose.
26 And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.

In God, there is no hopeless situation at all; we only need to believe and have faith in God who is able to vanquish the hopeless situation. This is the basic lesson from the two miracles in our text.
The first miracle was the healing of the bleeding (issue of blood) woman for twelve years. She went to many specialist doctors and spent all her resources, but remained unhealed. That was hopeless. When she touched the hem of Jesus’s garment with faith, she became whole.
The second was the restoration to life of Jairus’ daughter by Jesus. The twelve years old girl died – a hopeless situation – but Jesus restored happiness for which the news spread.
Faith motivates us to overcome all obstacles in order to reach out to Jesus who only can change our hopeless situation. Again, in our times of desperation, we do not have to worry about the correct way to reach out to God. Like the woman, we can simply reach out in faith. He will respond.
Humility and reverence can be the key to our hopeless situation – Jairus was a ruler of the synagogue, yet he was humble and showed reverence to the only One who has the power to give and take life (Psalm 95:6; 1 Samuel 2:6). God has power over death.
The miracles of Jesus were signs of God’s special intervention in human affairs. We must learn to believe and have faith in God’s healing power through Jesus Christ. The same power is at work today, only have faith and believe.
- Not knowing how to approach God in times of problem, can be a barrier to one’s miracle.
- God, increase my faith.
