TEXT: JAMES 3:13–16
MEMORY VERSE: “Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.” James 3:13 KJV
0 And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. 12 When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted lace ”
Simply, wisdom is the correct application of knowledge. There is godly wisdom and there is wisdom of men. Godly wisdom is the ultimate. It teaches us all things. Apart from making man wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 3:15), its principles guide us in our private and public lives. Man is a social creature, living in a society with other people who do not share with him his privacy and intimacy. Indeed, man is not only a private person but public citizen. So, in every social grouping – the church, workplace, school, association or unions, peer groups, etc., man interacts with people from different backgrounds. In all these, we can find wisdom in God’s word on how we can best live in our various communities. It is godly wisdom that is needed to live in peace.
Godly wisdom can be measured by the depth of one’s character. This explains better our memory verse. The same way we can identify a tree by the type of fruit it produces, we can evaluate our wisdom by the way we act. On the other hand, have you ever known anyone who claimed to be wise, but acted foolishly? Foolishness (like envy, strife, etc.) are devilish. It leads to disorder, but godly wisdom leads to peace and goodness.
We can get godly wisdom by reading the Bible and adhering to its teachings. Seeking God’s wisdom and living by it guarantees a peaceful society. Don’t be wise in your own eyes (Proverbs 3:7).
- Which one do you have; the wisdom of men or godly wisdom?
- Ask God to help you identify the type of wisdom you have.
