ESOCS Devotional 21 January 2026 -The All-Knowing God
MEMORY VERSE: “I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted.” Job 42:2 NIV
TEXT: JOB 42:1-6
Then Job answered the Lord and said:
2 “I know that You can do everything,
And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.
3 You asked, ‘Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?’
Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand,
Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.
4 Listen, please, and let me speak;
You said, ‘I will question you, and you shall answer Me.’
5 “I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear,
But now my eye sees You.
6 Therefore I abhor myself,
And repent in dust and ashes.”

The phrase “no purpose of yours can be thwarted” speaks to the sovereignty and omniscience of God. He sees the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10) and nothing escapes His attention. Even when life feels chaotic or uncertain, God’s purposes are unfolding according to His divine plan. Psalm 147:5 affirms, “Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.” Unlike human wisdom, which is finite and often flawed, God’s knowledge is complete. He sees the “why” behind every delay, the “how” behind every difficulty, and the “when” behind every breakthrough.
Job had questioned God repeatedly throughout his trials. But when God finally spoke (Job 38–41), He didn’t provide direct answers. Instead, He revealed His greatness through creation, demonstrating His intimate knowledge of the universe. This humbled Job and shifted his perspective. He no longer needed answers; he needed to trust the One who knows all. In the same way, we are called to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5). Faith does not always give us the full picture; it gives us the full assurance that God holds the picture.
The fact that God’s purposes cannot be thwarted is a great source of hope. No matter what setbacks we face, no matter how bleak our circumstances may seem, God’s plan is never derailed. He works all things together for good (Romans 8:28), even when we don’t immediately see it. Consider Joseph’s words to his brothers in Genesis 50:20: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good…” God’s knowledge and power turn what is meant for evil into a vehicle for His glory.
Reflections
- What situations in your life seem confusing or uncertain right now?
- Are you leaning on your own understanding or trusting in God’s wisdom?
- How can Job’s confession of faith encourage you to trust God more deeply?
Prayer
- Lord, I thank you that you are all-knowing and all-powerful. Even when I don’t understand my trials, I trust in your perfect wisdom and plan. Help me to surrender like Job, knowing that your purposes for my life will stand. Teach me to rest in what you know, rather than worry about what I don’t. Amen.
