TEXT: : 1 TIMOTHY 5: 12-25
MEMORY VERSE: “Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially they who labor in the word and doctrine.” (1 Timothy 5: 17 KJV).
Church Leadership is a heavy responsibility. That was why Paul took time to write his letters (also known as Pastoral Epistles) to the youthful Pastor Timothy to guide him, based on his (Paul) experience. Church Leaders are not exempt from sin, faults, and mistakes; but they are often criticized for wrong reasons – minor imperfections, not meeting someone’s expectation, personality clashes, etc. Too often, they are targets for criticism because we give unrealistic targets. We take them for granted. But what is expected of us?
Paul admonished that we should support and appreciate Church Leaders who rule faithfully and diligently. Jesus and Paul emphasized the need to support the ones who lead and teach us cheerfully, gratefully, and generously. It could be by word of mouth straight from the heart (Luke 10:7; 1 Corinthians 9: 4-10; Proverbs 16:24), in kind, prayers (especially), and other ways we can appreciate them.
Another dimension to it is that complaints about Church Leaders should not be heard unless two or three witnesses confirm them (v 19). We can oppose them for improper or ungodly behaviour, bad leadership style, etc.; but in a fair and loving manner to avoid quarrel and to ensure restoration and ultimately, peace.
On the other hand, leading the Church must be with maturity, faithfulness, godliness, and no favouritism. The health of the body of Christ is far more important than an unserious Church Leader. We must choose only Church Leaders who are qualified (Titus 1:5-9). Let us support our Church Leaders and appreciate them because uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.
- Do you have any challenge with your Church Leader?
- Pray for peaceful resolution and unity of the Church.
