TEXT: MATTHEW 16:1-46
MEMORY VERSE: “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16).
In His admonition to His disciples, Jesus Christ tried to know how well they understood the things of God, rather than mere signs of the sky, representing physical things. They showed this in their answer to the questions He asked them: “Whom do men say that I the son of man am?” (v 13). Their answers to this truth revealed how shallow their minds were. In their answers, some saw Him as a preacher like John the Baptist; others, as a prophet like Elias, Jeremiah, and others. They did not really know who He was, even while with Him daily.
In a football match, some are mere spectators; some are business men who take advantage of the crowd to make money; some are participants, actually entertaining the people or struggling to win the prize. The spectators come to Jesus to see the miracles He did and tell the story, broadcasters. Business men take the gospel seriously, live by it, and reap the enormous benefits.
On the other hand, the players, referee, linesmen are the apostles who are out there ensuring the power of God is demonstrated to win souls and glorify the name of God Almighty. Therefore, if you see Jesus Christ as a prophet, He cannot do more than what a prophet can do for you. If you see Him to be a preacher, He will not do more than what a preacher can do for you. However, if like Peter you know Him as the Christ, the Son of the living God, He will give salvation and redemption to your soul and life everlasting in eternity with God, in addition to granting you all your material needs.
Finally, we should not be satisfied with superficial things around the gospel of Christ Jesus but that we should dig deeper to understand the basic principles and rules of God’s word, and the Spirit. Then, He will unveil the deeper secrets of God Almighty to us who are saints on earth.
- How can you understand deep the things of God?
- Pray that God will enable you understand him more and more.
