TEXT: MATHEW 23:1-22
MEMORY VERSE: “He who is greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself [with haughtiness and empty pride] shall be humbled (brought low), and whoever humbles himself [whoever has a modest opinion of himself and behaves accordingly] shall be raised to honor” (Matthew 23:11-12 AMP).
God’s ways are opposite the ways of the world. Whereas pride is one of the ways of the world, the kingdom path way to greatness begins with humility.
Jesus had once described John the Baptist as the greatest of all men born of woman (Luke 7:28; Matt. 11:11). What exactly made him so great?
When John’s disciples asked him of the man whom he was with on the other side of Jordan, he said “A man can receive only what is given him from heaven. You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ but am sent ahead of him … He must become greater; I must become less” (John 3:27,28 30 NIV).
People of the world want to be great and to be served by others. But true children of God are humble and would want to serve others. That is God’s way. Humility is the attitude of not thinking you are better than other people. Let us learn from John. He humbled himself, that he may exalt Christ Jesus the Lord; and in turn, our Lord exalted him.
We learn here that humility endears us to God’s heart. Pride would make us His enemies. Our Lord Jesus is God; yet He became ordinary man; and also washed the feet of men that He created, as He served them. What an awesome example for us to imitate! Humility places us in God’s heart, in His warm embrace and care, and therefore, in His ever-wonderful presence. Let us live a life of humility that we abide in His love throughout life; and not walk away.
- Endeavour to live a life of humility at all times.
- Oh God, help me to overcome pride, that I may be humble.
