ESOCS Devotional 2 March 2025 – God’s Promises Bring Hope
MEMORY VERSE: “So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.” Hebrews 6: 18 NLT
TEXT: HEBREWS 6:10–20
For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister. 11 And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, 12 that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, 14 saying, “Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.” 15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. 16 For men indeed swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute. 17 Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, 18 that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.
19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, 20 where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

There doesn’t seem to be much that we can count on to steady our lives. Jobs can be lost, loved ones may die, plans must sometimes be altered, and dreams are often dashed. And as images of destruction begin to roll across our screens, we are all tempted to worry, wonder and fret. What can be done? Where is God in the midst of this disaster? Where is He in the midst of the storm that threatens your own life?
May I remind us of one strong anchor that is hooked to at least four unbreakable lifelines? You see, God is a God of promises. From the first chapter of the Bible, Scripture makes a case for the dependability of God. Nine times the text reiterates “God said.” And without exception when God spoke, something happened. By divine fiat there were light, land, beaches, and creatures. We are left with one conclusion: God’s word is sure and His promises can be trusted. What He says happens.
God’s purposes and promises are unchangeable. Our souls do have an anchor, which holds fast, no matter how many storms we experience.God promised Abraham to bless and multiply his descendants and He fulfilled every promise. Search the scriptures and you will find out that God is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. He is not an unjust God, neither does He forget your labour of love towards your fellow brethren (v 10).
We haven’t been promised an easy earthly life, free from trouble and suffering. As the waves of circumstances rage around us, we must keep on loving and doing the will of the Father; and we will be sure that what we hope for will come to pass (v 11), and the eternal hope for our souls is steadfast and sure.
The reason we have such a hard time remembering our anchor of hope is because our lives are above deck, where the storms rage. To regain our hope, we must regularly peer into the depths of God’s Word to be reminded of the eternal promises that cannot fail.
CHALLENGES
- Do you believe that the promises of God bring hope? When faced with difficulties, how do you focus on God’s promises?
PRAYER POINT
- Father, we acknowledge you as the reason for our hope. When life hurts, help us keep our thoughts fixed on the truth about who you are. Remind us that you live in us by the power of your Holy Spirit. And fill us to overflowing with a hope that reflects you to those around us, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
