ESOCS Devotional 2 December 2023 – The Wise Builder
MEMORY VERSE: “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and forth them, I will like him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock.” Matthew 7: 24 KJV
TEXT: MATTHEW 7:22-27 (KJV)
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

A building is only as strong as the foundation it is built on. To build a church or a life on anything other than Christ is to build a sandcastle. Jesus talked about this in our text. The house built on a rock withstood the storm, but the house built on the sand fell, “and great was its fall.” Jesus is speaking of the absolute necessity of building your life on the right kind of foundation. Because the foundation is what holds everything up, it’s what holds everything together. No matter what quality of materials you use; no matter how carefully you join the frame together; no matter how skilled your craftsmen may be – if the foundation isn’t solid and stable, your “house” will lack integrity. Over time, cracks will develop in the walls. The windows will stick. The roof will leak. And sooner or later, the storms of life will bring it crashing down, and everything you’ve worked so hard to build will be lost.
the wise builder is the man/woman who is building with The Lord, the Master Builder, the surest of all foundations. Remember the wise builder choose to build his house on The Rock, Brethren there are rocks and there are rocks, but there is someone whom the Bible introduced as the Rock of all rocks, The Rock of all ages, The Rock that abideth forever, The Rock that can never fail, the un-moveable mover, the unshakable shaker, The Lord God of all Flesh, Whom nothing is too hard for and whomsoever builds their foundation on him and builds their lives with Him is called a wise builder because whatever he/she does cannot fall or fail regardless of when the storms, rains, winds, floods, trials, tribulations, troubles of life come, why, because the foundation is founded upon a rock.
The wise builder is a man/woman that is deeply rooted and grounded in his/her relationship with God. A man or woman of faith, that reads, studies, mediates and memorizes the word of God. Job said in Job 23:12, “Thy word have I esteemed more than my necessary food.” David said in Psalm 119:11, “Thy word have I hid in my heart so that I might not sin against thee.” The wise builder is a man/woman who is not only a hearer of God’s word but a doer of God’s word. For when we love God and totally obey His commandments, we will definitely live victorious lives here on earth and we will end our race of life well, we will see God in Glory and we will be like Him in Jesus name.
- Are you a wise builder? Are you building on Jesus Christ? Will your building stand the test of time? Meditate on these.
- Heavenly Father, grant me grace to build my in life on Jesus Christ, the solid Rock in Jesus name.
