ESOCS Devotional 2 August 2024 – Learn to Practice What You Know
MEMORY VERSE: “Now it is here with you. You know it and can quote it, so now obey it.” Deuteronomy 30:11 GNV
TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 30:11-END
“For this commandment which I command you today is not too mysterious for you, nor is it far off. 12 It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will ascend into heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ 13 Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ 14 But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.
15 “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil, 16 in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess. 17 But if your heart turns away so that you do not hear, and are drawn away, and worship other gods and serve them, 18 I announce to you today that you shall surely perish; you shall not prolong your days in the land which you cross over the Jordan to go in and possess. 19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; 20 that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.”

The world would have been a better place with less crime and less conflict if all Christians keep to the tenets of the word of God, which they have come to know. Anyway, I see no sight of us having such an occasion. Men will continue to be hypocritical: Teaching the word of God, holding high positions in the congregation of God’s people but living and conducting themselves in the manner that is a direct opposite of what they teach and believe.
The ways of God are not far-fetched. They are in the scriptures, written and available. (Deuteronomy 30:11-14; 1 John 5:3). The urge to know God more drives the need to search the scriptures and learn from it. David in his desire to have a better relationship with God said, “As a deer long for a stream of cool water, so I long for you, O God” (Psalm 42:1).
One should know and be convinced of the reason he should allow the word of God to rule him. No reasonable man holds fast to a belief except he is convinced of the purpose it will serve in his life. The key purpose of allowing the leadership of God over our lives is that our life depends on God. God is the omnipotent, Omnipresent and Omniscient of our lives. He is the beginning and the end of human life. He can kill and make alive. Whom God blesses, no one can curse. But those who think there is an alternative to what God is in human life do not see any reason they should rely on God’s word. We are humans and not animals, the choice is yours to make (Deuteronomy 30:25, 16) see also JOHN 3:16.
We are better than the people of God in the Old Testament. They had the word of God written in the hand book. They had to read, understand and struggle with keeping the word of God. But we are now blessed with the power of the Holy Spirit that enables us understand and practice the word of God. We now have the word of God written in our hearts. We now have the power to be called the sons and daughters of God. This power comes from the Holy Spirit of God (John 1:12).
If you are not sure that you have received the power of the Spirit of God, make it a prayer point now.
- Choose to have God rule over your life. It is the best of all human choices.
- May I ever live for your purpose, Oh Lord, in Jesus name. Amen
