ESOCS Devotional 17 November 2025 – Therefore, Pay Attention!
MEMORY VERSE: “Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.” Hebrews 2:1
TEXT: HEBREWS 2:1-9
Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2 For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, 4 God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?
5 For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels. 6 But one testified in a certain place, saying:
“What is man that You are mindful of him,
Or the son of man that You take care of him?
7 You have made him a little lower than the angels;
You have crowned him with glory and honor,
And set him over the works of Your hands.
8 You have put all things in subjection under his feet.”
For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him. 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.

On the highway, flashing lights, sirens and bright signs are designed to get our attention when there is something coming of which we must be aware. In a very real way, they are shouting “Pay Attention!” Hebrews 2 begins with a similar warning. The word “Therefore” points us back to the message in Chapter 1. Then Paul says, “… we ought to give the more earnest heed”. It is necessary that we focus significant attention on what we have heard about Christ. This is God’s warning for us to sit up and Pay Attention!
Because Christ is better than prophets and angels, we must pay careful attention to two duties: First, we must pay careful attention that we … Do not let what we heard slip away (v 1) – glide by, pass away or to escape. We tend to be forgetful. To prevent this, we must hold tightly Bible truths. Hold tightly the words of the prophets about Christ. We must read and study the whole Bible. Sadly, many Christians neglect the Old Testament. Yet, the O. T. prophesies of Christ and points us to Christ. Hold tightly what Christ Himself said. The Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) record many of the words, teachings and miracles of Christ (John 20:30-31). In the first chapter of Hebrews, we learned that Jesus Christ was better than all the prophets and angels. We must hold this tightly and not let it slip away from us.
Second, we must pay careful attention that we …Do not neglect God’s great salvation (vv. 2-4). Angelic messages were authoritative (v 2). God often spoke through angels in the O. T. As God’s representatives, they spoke God’s words. Their word was steadfast or firm because it was God’s word (Acts 7:38, 53; Gal. 3:19). Under the law, when God’s word spoken by an angel was disobeyed, that transgression (sin) and disobedience received a just punishment. For example, Leviticus 24:16 says, “And he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the LORD, shall be put to death.”
Jews highly feared angelic messages. However, Christ’s message is more authoritative (vv. 3-4). Christ was better than the angels! Christ spoke of the salvation He was providing (Matt. 11:28; John 5:24; 14:6; 6:40; 1 John 1:1). The answer is obvious, we cannot! Escape is impossible! No human can neglect the salvation provided by God and escape the damnation of hell for all eternity (John 3:36).
These verses warn us not to let slip what we have heard about Christ and we must not neglect God’s salvation. Jesus humbled Himself to become a man, to die for our filthy sins and to rise again to give us life. If you neglect that gracious gift of salvation paid for by Jesus Christ, you will never escape the eternal judgment of God upon your sin. My friend, there is NO other payment for sin. Without Christ’s salvation, you will pay for your sins in hell.
CHALLENGES
- Please educate yourself and others that the issue is not a few years in the fire made by God. It is spending eternal life in the fire of hell! This is really serious! It should be taken seriously!
PRAYER POINT
- Father, may Christ reign and impact my life daily. Amen.
