ESOCS Devotional 17 February 2026 – Unquestionable God
MEMORY VERSE: “”Woe to him who strives with his Maker! – a worthless piece of broken pottery among other pieces equally worthless [and yet presuming to strive with his Maker]! Shall the clay say to him who fashions it, What do you think you are making? or, Your work has no handles?” Isaiah 45:9 AMP
TEXT: ISAIAH 45:9-13d
“Woe to him who strives with his Maker!
Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth!
Shall the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’
Or shall your handiwork say, ‘He has no hands’?
10 Woe to him who says to his father, ‘What are you begetting?’
Or to the woman, ‘What have you brought forth?’ ”
11 Thus says the Lord,
The Holy One of Israel, and his Maker:
“Ask Me of things to come concerning My sons;
And concerning the work of My hands, you command Me.
12 I have made the earth,
And created man on it.
I—My hands—stretched out the heavens,
And all their host I have commanded.
13 I have raised him up in righteousness,
And I will direct all his ways;
He shall build My city
And let My exiles go free,
Not for price nor reward,”
Says the Lord of hosts.

Just as many in the world quarrel with their leaders, many believers quarrel with God. They get angry with God for the decisions He has made. They argue against reasons to do what He has asked them to do. God is the one in control. Isaiah calls the one who quarrels just a potsherd, which is a broken piece of pottery with no real value in itself.
God doesn’t have the same purpose in mind for all of us. The fact is that not all of us are going to be missionaries on the front line or great men like Moses, Daniel, Peter and Paul. Some of us are just made for common use. God has the right to choose what He wants to make and who He wants to use for what purpose. But you need to be aware that if God wants to use you for a special purpose, then the moulding will take longer and turning of the wheel will be greater in your life than in those around you. You will wonder why God allows so many difficult things to come into your life, while others around you seem to have things much easier. Fortunately, it is preparation for the making of a special vessel!
The difference between a potter dealing with clay and God dealing with us is that the clay doesn’t moan, groan and exert its own will against that of the potter! Yet when God deals with us we do all of those things. What the potter wants from the clay is firstly that it will be flexible and mouldable. It has to be flexible enough that He can create what He wants to do with that clay. It’s exactly the same with God in our lives.
We need to learn that we cannot strive against the Lord and win. After all, He is our Creator, He is God Almighty, and He knows everything about us, there are no secrets from Him. Just as the pot cannot tell the Potter that He is doing things the wrong way, we too cannot tell our Creator that He messed up. He is Sovereign, and He knows what is best for each of us. Let us stop kicking against the goals and accept God’s will for our lives.
Reflections
- Have you submitted your life to God in total obedience for proper moulding?
Prayer
- Oh Lord, just like the clay, humble us to live a life of total submission to your will.
