TEXT: PROVERBS 1:20-33
MEMORY VERSE: “Turn you at my reproof; behold, I will pour out my Spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you” (Proverbs 1:23 KJV).
In our text today, wisdom is presented as a person. He speaks to us as a teacher with divine knowledge of the truth. In verse 22, wisdom asks, “How long, you simpletons, will you insist on being simple-mindedness? How long will you fools hate knowledge?” (NLT). Wisdom is viewed crying everywhere. Even today, we can hear wisdom crying from the pulpits, in the Sunday Schools; on the streets; through the mass media. Even in commercial vehicles and the social media. Yet the simple or foolish ones remain adamant and rebellious. Who are these simple ones? Ironically, these are not those who are intellectually handicapped. They are rather those who have no moral conscience. Some Bible translations call them scoffers. Some others call them scorners. Some just call them fools (vs. 22). These persons mock at wisdom; they are disobedient and stubborn to the ways of God. But when their calamity will come, the Lord will laugh and mock at them (vs. 26-27).
Those who are arrogant in their own ways, are on the path of self-destruction. It follows therefore that, security and thus, happiness, come only when a person is confident in his obedience to the will of God. And, since the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, then, one finds happiness and true prosperity in life, only when he fears God, and keeps His commandments (Eccl. 12:13b).
- The wisdom of this world is a faster rout to prosperity. Do you agree?
Lord Jesus, it is not my desire to gain the world, and lose my soul. Please help me.
