TEXT: 2 Samuel 22:1- 25 KJV KJV
MEMORY VERSE: “Therefore the Lord hath recompensed me according to my righteousness; and according to my cleanliness in his eye sight.” 2 Samuel 22:25 KJV
In simple terms, appreciation means feeling or expression of admiration, or gratitude, thankful, recognition. When you have an appreciation for something or somebody, you can see and truly understand its good qualities. It is the act of recognizing or understanding that something is valuable, and important. Appreciation comes from the depth of one’s heart. At one time or the other, someone has shown us love by doing something good to us and we appreciated by saying; thank you, I am grateful. Aside our fellow human beings, we must show appreciation to God at all times for innumerable reasons.
David was a skilled musician who played his harp for Saul (1Sam 16: 23), instituted the music programs in the Temple (1Chron. 25), and wrote more of the books of Psalms than anyone else. So, writing a song like this was not unusual for him. In our text, he showed appreciation to God despite his (David) lapses in judgment and godliness. He continued to seek the Lord out of the depths of his soul, from the beginning of his life to its very end. In the twilight of his years, he sang a beautiful song declaring God as the source of his victory. He declared that neither horses nor chariots could deliver him, but only the hand of the living God. He showed appreciation to God because He delivered him from his enemies, the waves of death, floods of ungodly men, sorrows of hell and snares of death that compassed him, that made him afraid and prevented him (2 Sam. 22:5-6). In his song, he used many word pictures such as rock, light, shield, horn, and high tower, to portray God’s marvellous attributes.

As living spirits, every child of God has many reasons to be thankful for – His loving kindness, tender mercies demonstrated through protection, providence, love, forgiveness, healing, good health, and salvation of our soul, above all.
One can show appreciation to God in many ways. One of them is praise, as David did. Praise is not just a song about God; it is a song to God. We can also devote our time in things of God, financial contributions, ideas, teaching, helping the poor/less privileged, and a host of others. Thanksgiving establishes our blessings. A person who shows appreciation is following the footsteps of Jesus Christ, who never failed to do so. Develop the habit of appreciation to your fellow human beings and above all, to God.
