TEXT: 1 CORINTHIANS 1: 26 – 2, 9
MEMORY VERSE: “But as it is written, eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him”(1 Corinthians 2:9 KJV).
In verse 29 of our text, Saint Paul warns that no flesh should glory or boast before the presence of God. Thus, Paul was pointing to the fact that humility is a key Christian quality that should necessarily be cultivated by all. Paul had observed that much of the differences and disagreement between opposing factions in the Corinthian Church were the results of the attitudes of pride and boasting. Paul then challenged them to put away arrogance, and to live in humility. Pride will always go before a fall and ruin (Prov. 16:18); and shame is the crown of arrogance (Prov. 11:2).
In Luke 14:11, the scripture states, “For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself, shall be exalted” (KJV). In Matt. 18:4, Jesus charges that the humility of believers should be like that of children. This, the Master warns is the easiest way to vie for honours in the Kingdom of God. In James 4:6, we see that God gives more grace to the humble, but opposes the proud and arrogant person.
Moreover, it takes a humble heart to adhere to the instructions of the Messiah. So, as many as will receive His words, to them He will give power to be called the sons of God (John 1:12). To such persons, belong the earth and the kingdom of heaven; hence, 1 Corinthians 2:9 states, “No eye has seen, nor ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him” (NLT). Therefore, love the Lord, be of humble spirit; and wait for it: abundant riches, with divine promotion from above.
- Be diligent to remove pride and arrogance from your character.
- Father, please help to clip my wings, for my own good. Amen.
