ESOCS Devotional 15 July 2025 – The Immeasurable Depth of God’s Love
MEMORY VERSE: “I will keep my promise and make you mine, and you will acknowledge me as Lord. At that time, I will answer the prayers of my people Israel. I will make rain fall on the earth, and the earth will produce grain.” Hosea 2:20-21 GNB
TEXT: HOSEA 2:14-23
“Therefore, behold, I will allure her,
Will bring her into the wilderness,
And speak comfort to her.
15 I will give her her vineyards from there,
And the Valley of Achor as a door of hope;
She shall sing there,
As in the days of her youth,
As in the day when she came up from the land of Egypt.
16 “And it shall be, in that day,”
Says the Lord,
“That you will call Me ‘My Husband,’
And no longer call Me My Master,’
17 For I will take from her mouth the names of the Baals,
And they shall be remembered by their name no more.
18 In that day I will make a covenant for them
With the beasts of the field,
With the birds of the air,
And with the creeping things of the ground.
Bow and sword of battle I will shatter from the earth,
To make them lie down safely.
19 “I will betroth you to Me forever;
Yes, I will betroth you to Me
In righteousness and justice,
In lovingkindness and mercy;
20 I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness,
And you shall know the Lord.
21 “It shall come to pass in that day
That I will answer,” says the Lord;
“I will answer the heavens,
And they shall answer the earth.
22 The earth shall answer
With grain,
With new wine,
And with oil;
They shall answer Jezreel.
23 Then I will sow her for Myself in the earth,
And I will have mercy on her who had not obtained mercy;
Then I will say to those who were not My people,
‘You are My people!’
And they shall say, ‘You are my God!’ ”

In John 15:13, we perceive that the ultimate proof of God’s unfailing and eternal love is Jesus Christ, who gave His life for sinful humanity. Also, in John 3:16, 17, we notice that God’s overwhelming love for mankind induced Him to give His only Son to redeem those who believe from eternal damnation. Christ was not sent to judge the world, but that through Him the world would be saved.
It follows therefore, from our text, that God’s love is more domineering than His judgment. Hosea reminded the Hebrew people of God’s love in the past; more so, as was demonstrated in the event of the Exodus. However, when they responded with unfaithfulness, God justifiably got offended and threatened to withdraw His love (v. 23). But just as God commanded Hosea to take back his unfaithful wife, He fully intended to take back His adulterous Israel. This is a demonstration that God’s compassion and love supersedes His anger and judgment.
Hosea therefore ended his prophecy with a heart-warming message from God, that He would heal their unfaithfulness, and that His love would know no bounds, even as His anger would be gone forever (Hosea 14:4). We therefore join Hosea to plead with everyone to repent and return to God, for the kingdom of God is at hand (Matthew 4:17).
CHALLENGES
- Because God’s love is eternal and unfailing, shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?
PRAYER POINT
- Lord God of mercy, give me the grace to come away from every life of filthiness.
