TEXT: EXODUS 34:1-10
MEMORY VERSE: “And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation” (Exodus 34:6-7 KJV)
The word ‘glory’ means high renown or honour won by notable achievements. It also means magnificence or great beauty, or a “luminous ring or halo, especially as depicted around the head of a Holy person (e.g., Christ) or a Saint.” Glory is from the Latin word gloria, which means “fame, renown.”
The glory of God is His character, nature, and His way of relating with His creatures. Moses had asked to see God’s glory (Exodus 33:18). But God did not show him a vision of His power and majesty, but of His love. God’s glory is revealed in His mercy, grace, longsuffering, goodness, truth, forgiveness, and justice.
Many people think that in the Old Testament era, God is a God of wrath, only to be feared. But His words to Moses revealed His very heart, nature and, or essence (Exodus 33:19). This is His glory.
What do we learn from these assurances? First, God is merciful, gracious, loving, forgiving. This is the Glory of God. Contra wise, we must not accept anyone’s argument that God is merely vengeful. Instead, remember that God is “longsuffering,” and His love cannot diminish or be diminished. God’s Renown is the greatest of all known renown of men – before, now, or that will be in future. The glory of God is the manifestation of His presence through His mercy, grace, love. It is His quality of excellence and superiority as God of all.
- Do you experience the glory of God daily in your life?
- Ask God to reveal to you daily, His glory as He did to Moses.
