TEXT: I CORINTHIANS 4:1-13
MEMORY VERSE: “Moreover, it is required in stewards that a man be found faithful.” I Corinthians 4:2
According to the English Dictionary, stewardship is the act of taking care of or managing something, especially on behalf of someone, most probably, the owner. Stewardship is bestowed on the basis of trust, which is expected to translate to faithfulness. Practically speaking, so many persons have betrayed this trust or confidence by allowing themselves to be overwhelmed by the icing on the cake. This has shattered so many interpersonal relationships, caused untold acrimony amongst friends, relatives, associates, and even brethren in the household of faith.
Dearly beloved, the Holy Spirit is using today’s passage to warn us against unfaithful stewardship. Apostle Paul, in verse 2 clearly puts it thus: “Moreover, it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.” It was on this premise that he went further in verse 7 to warn against becoming too full of oneself (puffed up). Stewardship is a privilege that should not be taken for granted.
More so, man is alive because of the breath of life God breathed into him (Gen. 2:7). Therefore, man will be expected to give account of that breath, which originally was given him by God. By implication, man must be faithful with that breath of life, as long as he lives. The day of reckoning is a certainty, a day of rendering account of stewardship of that which God has placed in us. Many are privileged to be in various positions of authority. How faithful are you in these positions? As a leader in one unit, association or level of church administration, how faithful are you? Have you lost sight that you are holding such position in trust for the owner, God? Never give room to pride, lies, falsehood, and arrogance; for they are the ways of an unfaithful steward.
As you reflect on this passage and go about your daily routine, be conscious of the fact that He that made you different from others. By virtue of your position of stewardship, your scorecard will be required one day. Therefore, be faithful in all you do, even with your body, for it is given unto you for God’s pleasure. The Master of the stewards will soon come. Repent today!
