ESOCS Devotional 15 August
TEXT: Joel 2: 28-32
MEMORY VERSE: “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:” Joel 2:28 KJV
When a promise is made and fulfilled, both parties are happy. Jesus promised His disciples to send them the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit that will teach and guide them in all things. The purpose was to empower them to do mighty things and increase. To give them the grace and enablement to do the work of the Kingdom that the gospel will be preached, souls converted and the church grow. Every Christian needs this empowerment to be effective both in life and in the work of God. Without it, Christianity becomes a problem; for he will labour unsuccessfully to succeed and live victoriously as a Christian.
The disciples of Jesus received a new heart and a special ability that made them to excel in the ministry, face and overcome trials and great persecutions, performed outstanding miracles and received wisdom from above that no one could stand them. They preached the gospel with power and performed signs and wonders; and the church grew in number.

HOW TO RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT
- You need to hear and receive the word of truth, which is the message of salvation (Ephesians 1:13).
- You must be born again (John 3:3 -7).
- You must love God and keep his commands (John 14:15-17).
- There should be a laying on of hands to receive the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 9:17; 1 Timothy 4:14).
- Through the sovereign act of God as in the Pentecost and in the house of Cornelius.
The benefit of being filled with the Holy Spirit is unquantifiable. You cannot do without it. You cannot step out of your comfort zone to do extraordinary acts of faith. It is the salt of the Christian, it is what makes the difference in Him. He is a gift is for all persons who accept the call of God and obey the gospel. As we celebrate the Pentecost today; rejoice for this promise is fulfilled.
