TEXT: MATTHEW 17: 14-21
MEMORY VERSE: “And Jesus said unto them, because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, if ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” (Matthew 17:20 KJV).
In Mark 16: 17-18, Jesus restated the benefits that accrue to those whose faith and belief in God is unshakable. Such persons have the ability to cast out devils. They shall speak with new tongues. They shall grab, without any harm to their bodies, serpents and scorpions. They can even drink poison, without any negative effect. Above all, they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall be healed. This feat played out on the day of Pentecost, when the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2: 2-4).
However, on this very occasion, the disciples were not able to cast out the demon from the child who was possessed (vs. 16). Our Lord gave the reason: “because of your little faith.” And then, He also said, “…. if thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth” (Mk. 9:23 KJV).
Today, all things are still possible, only if we believe. The Holy Spirit and power of God are still operational. These powers are still at work today in the lives of individuals, and in the corporate life of the Church. All that is needed is to exercise the power of faith, just like the Master has stated, as recited in our memory verse above.
- The bane of Christians today is the problem of weak faith. What is your advice to the present generation of believers?
- Heavenly Father, we plead that you help our unbelief, and rekindle our faith in Thee. Amen.
