TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 4:1-18
MEMORY VERSE: “Take courage and acquit yourselves like men, O Philistines, lest you become slaves to the Hebrews as they have been to you; acquit yourselves like men and fight.” 1 Samuel 4:9 RSV
Determination gives you the resolve to keep going in spite of the road blocks that lay. When the Israelites made a great noise at the arrival of the Ark of the Lord, fear gripped the Philistines. But with determination, they went into battle and won it, capturing the Ark of the Lord.
It is better to fight and demonstrate your courage, even if you fail than to live in the paradise of timid souls. He who tries and fails may be the founder of a better day, and become the way for weaker souls. No wonder a French proverb says, “In fama non si vien, ne sotto cotter,” which means “For fame is not won by lying on a feather bed nor under a canopy.”
What is that thing facing you in life which you think you cannot achieve? Have you taken courage and determined to do it? Life does not judge us by how we look but by what we do. Isaiah 7:9b says, “If you will not believe, surely, you shall not be established” (RSV).
Nelson Mandela’s gave the world a lifetime paradigm. He said, “During my lifetime, I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people; I have fought against black domination, I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal for which I am prepared for.” He actually fought against apartheid in South Africa with determination and won. You should do the same against the odds of this life. You will win also, definitely; for God is with you always.
