TEXT: LUKE 5:27-39
MEMORY VERSE: “And he left all, rose up, and followed him.” Luke 5:28
Levi who was charged with the collection of tributes/tax avowed the authority of Jesus Christ, notwithstanding the position of the Pharisees on the personality of Jesus Christ. At the beckon of Jesus, he left the comfort of his livelihood and followed Jesus. This act was wrought by the Holy Spirit who does the conversion and conviction of sinners and unbelievers.
On the above premise, believers are challenged to follow Christ with a high sense of sincerity without looking back or being entangled with doubt, for Jesus assures that all that follow Him, He shall in no wise be cast out (Mathew 16:25).
Following Christ as implied, goes beyond self-alignment to the Church or her activities. A sincere follower of Jesus must therefore eschew any form of double standards in his/her dealings with fellow humans. One cannot claim to be a sincere follower and still stick to customs that are abhorrent with the standards of God. Such can better be described as being religious than a follower of Christ.
A Sincere follower of Christ must deny himself of his comfort zone and be conscious that the carnal mind is enmity against God (Rom. 8:7). It is also important to be reminded that a sincere follower of Jesus must not be conformed to this world (Rom. 12:2a).
Levi knew himself to be part of a relegated strata of the spiritual society but also had the conviction that following Jesus wholeheartedly would be of great benefit to him than remaining under the bondage of customs.
In a nutshell, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and every other thing shall be added unto you.”. Follow Christ with all your heart.
