ESOCS Devotional 14 August 2025 – The Seed of Life
MEMORY VERSE: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.” John 12:24
TEXT: JOHN 12:16-38
His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him.
17 Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. 18 For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign. 19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, “You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!”
20 Now there were certain Greeks among those who came up to worship at the feast. 21 Then they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”
22 Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
23 But Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. 24 Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. 25 He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.
27 “Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify Your name.”
Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”
29 Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.”
30 Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake. 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” 33 This He said, signifying by what death He would die.
34 The people answered Him, “We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”
35 Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them.
37 But although He had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him, 38 that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke:
“Lord, who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

Life is a seed that must be sown. From our anchor scripture, Jesus Christ explains that life is a seed that must be sown for the benefit of people. And this benefit affects both humanity and divinity. The aim of a seed is to feed. You are a seed that is supposed to be sown for the feeding of many. It is important we note that the real worth of any life is defined by the number of human beings who draw value from it. The quality of any life is determined by how many tears have been replaced by the smiles on the faces of people. We truly need to ask ourselves questions such as: How many lives have been upgraded and enhanced in value because I exist? How many people would have been dead if they had not encountered me? How many people are what they are because of my existence?
Life indeed is a seed that is designed for the feeding of a generation. The time will come when people may forget the size of the house we lived in or the type of car we drove. But there is something that they can never forget, and that is the number of lives we touched and the number of souls we impacted in sundry ways. How many souls are alive because we are alive? How many people crossed from darkness into light because of us? Beloved, this is a matter of great concern, as we are also a seed for divinity. What joy is our Maker getting from our lives? What are your inputs towards Kingdom service and expansion? Are you a gain or pain to the Kingdom of God? Are you adding value or you are devaluing the Kingdom? This has become imperative due to the setback Church growth, development, evangelism, soul winning, administration and expansion have suffered, resulting from the bad seed sown by wolves in sheep clothing.
Let it be clear that a life that is not lived as a seed is a life that lived as a waste. Until we live beyond ourselves, we cannot live beyond our time. We trust that we shall be profitable for God’s Kingdom. Remember, the real worth of any life is defined by the number of human beings who draw value from it.
