TEXT: ZECHARIAH 8: 9-17
MEMORY VERSE: “These are the things ye shall do; speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates.” (Zechariah 8:16 KJV).
Proverbs 14:34 says, “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” The reality of this proverb came to pass in the life of Israel as a nation. They had increased their sinful acts against their God, and He gave them over to their enemies. They suffered immense disgrace, as their towns and villages, including the temple were destroyed.
Even in the life of individuals, God hates sin, and can hardly tolerate iniquity (Hab. 1:13). In Proverbs 6: 16-19, the Lord God enumerated seven abominable things, which He hates with passion, as follows: a haughty eyes or arrogant look; a lying tongue; hands that kill the innocent; a heart that plots evil; feet that races to do wrong; a false witness who pours out lies; and a person who sows discord in a family.
God punished their fathers because they had turned into a society of injustice and oppression among themselves. Nonetheless, God promised that He would bless them for restoring justice, mercy and fair-play in the land. In this context, God describes the fundamental social practices that must be restored and maintained, including: justice, truth, love, avoid false oath, and selfishness. These are eternal ethics that must be upheld by all children of God everywhere, and every time.
- Do you think, if the world would try righteousness, things will change for good?
- Righteous God, please help our generation to embrace righteousness in all our ways. Amen.
