ESOCS Devotional 12 April 2026 – The Danger of Wasted Grace
MEMORY VERSE: “What more could have been done for my vineyard than I have done for it? When I looked for good grapes, why did it yield only bad?” Isaiah 5:4 NIV
TEXT: ISAIAH 5:1-7
Now let me sing to my Well-beloved
A song of my Beloved regarding His vineyard:
My Well-beloved has a vineyard
On a very fruitful hill.
2 He dug it up and cleared out its stones,
And planted it with the choicest vine.
He built a tower in its midst,
And also made a winepress in it;
So He expected it to bring forth good grapes,
But it brought forth wild grapes.
3 “And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah,
Judge, please, between Me and My vineyard.
4 What more could have been done to My vineyard
That I have not done in it?
Why then, when I expected it to bring forth good grapes,
Did it bring forth wild grapes?
5 And now, please let Me tell you what I will do to My vineyard:
I will take away its hedge, and it shall be burned;
And break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down.
6 I will lay it waste;
It shall not be pruned or dug,
But there shall come up briers and thorns.
I will also command the clouds
That they rain no rain on it.”
7 For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel,
And the men of Judah are His pleasant plant.
He looked for justice, but behold, oppression;
For righteousness, but behold, a cry for help.

In Isaiah 5, God speaks through the prophet in a parable comparing Israel to a carefully tended vineyard. He had done everything necessary for it to thrive, cleared the land, planted the best vines, built a watchtower, and provided water. Yet, instead of producing good fruit, it yielded only bad. The vineyard had wasted the grace lavished upon it.
This passage is a sobering reminder that God’s grace demands a response. When God pours out His love, provision, guidance, and correction, He expects a harvest of righteousness in return. Wasted grace happens when we resist transformation, take His blessings for granted, or live in persistent disobedience.
Many times, we desire the benefits of God’s vineyard, protection, peace, and provision, without bearing the fruit He seeks: love, obedience, humility, repentance, justice, and faithfulness. The danger of wasted grace is that it leads to judgment, not just disappointment. God’s grace is not a license to live carelessly; it is a holy invitation to bear fruit for His glory. The question is not whether God has done enough; He has. The question is: what am I doing with what He has already given?
Reflections
- In what areas of my life have I taken God’s grace for granted?
- What kind of “fruit” is my life producing? Is it pleasing to God?
- Have I responded to God’s investment in me with faithfulness or negligence?
- How can I begin today to honour God’s grace more fully through my words, thoughts, and actions?
Action Step
Take inventory of what God has invested in your life, spiritually, relationally, and materially. Identify one area where you’ve been unfruitful or negligent, and commit to take a specific, practical step today toward honouring His grace with obedience and purpose.
Prayer
- Gracious Father, thank you for all you have done for me.
- Forgive me for the times I have wasted your grace by living on my terms.
- Help me to produce fruits that pleases you, fruits that reflect your love and righteousness.
- Teach me to live in awe of your grace and never treat it lightly, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
