TEXT: JOHN 19:25-30
MEMORY VERSE: “When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up to ghost.” (John 19:30).
The words of a dying man are not only respected, but are considered very strong; and to be honoured. Such powerful words are most times loaded with truths, age long secrets, and futuristic counsels. To ignore them would be utterly wrong. No wonder then, the seven words of Jesus on the cross play a major role in shaping our Christian belief, as well as strengthening our faith in God.
The sixth word of Jesus on the cross is an authoritative declaration by our Lord that marked the end of the dominion of sin and Satan over humanity: “It is finished.” It has finality. It cannot be debated or voided. There is no room for argument here! It cannot be contested. The great Lord of heaven and earth has spoken. It is an eternal decree. Who can disallow it?
Our Lord came on a mission to the earth to accomplish many things; and He achieved them perfectly. He redeemed and saved humanity from sin (Rom. 6:14), eternal death in the fire of hell (particularly for those that believe in Him), and Satan. He justified us and made us guiltless (Rom. 3:24-25). He redeemed us from sickness: “But he was wounded for our transgression; … and with his stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). He freed us from satanic domination.
He reconciled us to the Father, and we became His children truly:“But now in Christ Jesus, ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ … And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross having slain the enmity thereby” (Eph. 2:13-16). We are now therefore reconciled to God.
He restored us to our original position in God: the position of sons and daughters who are princes and princesses of God’s kingdom: “To redeem them that were under the law; that we might receive the adoption of sons (Gal. 4:5). Therefore, the things we lost in Adam were restored to us in Christ (Joel 2:25).
- What Christ has finished, don’t start it again.
- Lord, grant me the grace to that the finished work find expression in my life.
