ESOCS Devotional 10 February 2025 – Walk in the Lord
MEMORY VERSE: “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in Him; rooted and built up in Him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.” Colossians 2:6, 7 KJV
TEXT: COLOSSIANS 2:1-12
For I want you to know what a great conflict I have for you and those in Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh, 2 that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
4 Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words. 5 For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.
6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.
8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; 10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.
11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

The faithfulness of the brethren in the church in Colosse made Apostle Paul happy. Though he could not physically be with them, he was with them in mind (1 Thessalonians 2:17) and desired to be with them in order to personally witness their faithfulness. However, to reach them, he wrote them a letter to encourage them to walk in the Lord and be firmly rooted and built up in Him.
From our text, to walk in the Lord is to live our life after the nature of the gospel we have heard and obeyed (Philippians 1:27; 1 Thessalonians 4:1). We should live the Christian life with the same zeal and eagerness with which we obeyed the gospel. We must not allow our love and enthusiasm to grow cold, and we must not become lukewarm (Revelation 3:15:16).
Furthermore, it is not enough to walk in the Lord, we must be firmly rooted and built up in Him which is the main factor that helps the believer to walk in Him. As plants draw nourishment from the soil through their root, so we draw our life-giving strength from Christ who was the source of the existence of the disciples of His time, and believers today. He nurses and nurtures the believer in order to keep him healthy and active spiritually to do His work.
If we separate ourselves from Him, we will spiritually die. No believer can live as an island unto himself and expect to excel.
Lastly, we must be zealous for Christ and abound in Him with thanksgiving.
CHALLENGES
- To be born again does not mean one has become firmly rooted and built up in Him.
PRAYER POINT
- Dear Lord, nurse and nurture me daily that I may be firmly rooted and built up in you.
