TEXT: ZECHARIAH 9:9-15
MEMORY VERSE: “The LORD says, Because of my covenant with you that was sealed by the blood of sacrifices, I will set your people free – free from the waterless pit of exile.” Zechariah 9:11 GNV
0 And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. 12 When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted lace ”
The message we read of in our text is that of restoration to God’s people of Israel. They were taken in exile in Babylon and the temple of God in Jerusalem was destroyed. This was because they breached their part of the covenant God made with their father Abraham and Moses. They were not faithful in worshiping and obeying God. (Exodus 20:1-21)
The God we serve is a Holy God; He does not tolerate sin in the lives of those that He has saved. Yet, He is merciful and will forgive, if we return to him with a sincere heart (Psalm 51:16, 17). In reaction to Israel’s suffering in exile, God remembered His covenant promise to Abraham (Genesis 15:1-21; Exodus 24:8), and resolved to deliverer them (v 11.)
For us, the covenant of mercy, which God sealed by the blood of Jesus Christ on the cross at Calvary is able to deliver us from the pit of poverty and the trouble that the devil has perpetuated in our lives (John 3:16). It is for us to believe and confess Jesus as Lord and personal Saviour.
This is the promise of God. In our text, the promise of salvation in Christ Jesus made to Israel is that the king’s dominion shall be from the river Euphrates to the end of the earth (vs. 9-10). Today, we can testify that Jesus reigns in our lives and delivers all those who come to Him beyond the borders of Israel (Romans 8:1, 2).
But the king came with humility, lowly and riding upon a donkey. By this, we know that our salvations is not by human strength and violence but by the Spirit of God. We have got to approach God in humility at all times and in all situations. This is how the restoration power of God can be released to draw us out of the waterless pit of bondage. (Romans 12:1-3).
- Have you approached Jesus Christ for your redemption?
- Father remember your covenant of mercy in the death and resurrection of Christ. Redeem me from all demonic manipulations and restore your goodness in my life. Thank you Lord, in Jesus Name. Amen
