ESOCS Devotional 1 February 2026 – Power of Unity
MEMORY VERSE: “”And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.” Genesis 11:6 KJV
TEXT: GENESIS 11:1-9
Now the whole earth had one language and one speech. 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there. 3 Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. 4 And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. 6 And the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. 7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” 8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. 9 Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

Unity means oneness, agreement, harmony etc. It does not mean that people are all the same or do the same thing. It simply means, people are able to work as one, despite the differences and diversities; for a common goal or purpose.
“… and now nothing will be restrained from them …” This is an apparent admission of the power of unity by God in our text. With unity, great concord, and harmony, nothing shall be impossible. However, the people building the Tower of Babel were not exactly doing the will of God, but their unity gave them an advantage. Imagine when we do the Will of God in unity; our powers will be limitless and boundless.
Jesus’s prayer in John 17:21, reflects the true purpose of unity: to reflect the oneness of God and to fulfill His will on earth. While the people of Babel used their unity to pursue their own glory, Jesus came to unite humanity in a way that honors God. Through Christ, people from all nations and languages are brought together in one body, the Church (Ephesians 2:14-16). This unity, grounded in Christ, is the fulfillment of God’s plan for humanity, where our collective efforts are directed towards glorifying Him rather than ourselves.
For today’s Christian, Genesis 11:6 serves as both a caution and an encouragement. It reminds us of the incredible power of unity and collaboration, but it also warns us of the dangers of pursuing goals that are not aligned with God’s will. It challenges us to examine our own lives and the ways we use our talents and abilities, asking whether we are using them to honor God or to build our own “towers.” It also encourages us to seek God’s guidance in all our endeavors. While human potential is vast, it is only when our plans are submitted to God that they truly succeed and bring about lasting good. Unity guarantees significant spiritual and physical results, like divine show of powerful presence, as seen in scriptures like the day of Pentecost, and Peter’s imprisonment and eventual deliverance. This unity is established in mutual love, humility, and a shared focus on Divine purpose.

- Are you a promoter of love and unity or a champion of discord among Brethren?
Prayer
