TEXT: JOHN 17:12-18
MEMORY VERSE: “I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil” (John 17:15 KJV).
John the Divine gave a revelation of the state of the world (Earth) after the war in heaven: “… Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! For the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time” (Rev. 12:12). “And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the Earth…” (Rev 8:13). This is also collaborated in the Cherubim and Seraphim Holy Hymn Book 91, Stanza 4: “I heard the voice from the heaven, woe betide the world below, Satan is driven to the world…”
It is the understanding of the above that prompted Jesus’ prayer in our text, which is our source of hope and assurances of safety as evident in our Hymn ‘… All the elects will be saved.’ The implications of Jesus’ prayer for us in such a trying time are thus:
Several troubles abound in the world: “… These things I have spoken unto you, … In the world ye shall have tribulations…” (John 16:33). To exist in the world is to be surrounded with troubles. Therefore, don’t shake, don’t quake or pressured and depressed when you see them coming (John 14:1).
There is a limit to satanic recklessness: The truth is God has placed a perpetual injunction that restricts the recklessness and operations of the devil against His people (Isaiah 54:15-17; Job 38:11; Psalm 91:7).
The assurance of safety and security: As we fulfil purpose and promote the kingdom in the world, our safety and security in God is guaranteed per time. “… Keep them from evil” means to preserve, protect, secure, defend, shield, and garrison their life – Prov. 18:10; Psalms 91, 121, and 125.
- Keep yourself from the world to be kept from the world’s evil.
- Father, I ask that as you keep me in the world and her evils.
