A public affairs analyst, Jake Epelle, has described last Saturday’s local government elections in Rivers State as unconstitutional and a threat to democratic governance.
Speaking on Monday during an interview on Channels Television, Epelle said the polls, conducted by a democratically elected government, amounted to “unprecedented political manoeuvring” and a “democratic scam.”
“It’s unfortunate we’re living in interesting times, especially politically speaking, and what played out in Rivers State on Saturday can only be described as a sham,” he said.
Epelle further warned that the outcome of the elections could trigger a constitutional crisis in the state, noting that the results would be challenged in court.
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) conducted the polls across the 23 local government areas of the state. According to results announced by the commission, the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured victory in 20 LGAs, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won in three.
