The College of Fellows of the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) has conferred Senator Magnus Abe with its prestigious Honorary Fellow of the Society award; the highest professional recognition reserved for individuals who have made outstanding and sustained contributions to environmental practice, science, and policy in Nigeria.
The formal investiture took place during the Gala Night and Awards Ceremony of the 34th National Conference and 35th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Society, held in Abuja.
Speaking on behalf of other awardees, Senator Abe described the NES as a unique organization with the capacity to guide Nigeria’s development in a sustainable direction. He emphasized that no nation can achieve true progress without understanding and preserving its environment.
“Whether we accept it or not, the environment is the single most important aspect of our lives that affects everything we do,” Abe said. “The Nigerian Environmental Society is in a unique position to assist this country to develop sustainably. If, as a nation, we develop without understanding our environment, then we will not be able to develop sustainably.”
Abe, who currently serves as Chairman of the Great Green Wall an agency under the Federal Ministry of Environment was commended by the NES President and Chairman of Council, Dr Efegbidiki Lympson Okobia, for his commitment to environmental protection during his tenure as a member of the Senate Committee on Environment in the 8th National Assembly.
Dr Okobia noted that, beyond his legislative contributions, Abe was honoured for initiating the bill that led to the establishment of Nigeria’s first specialised University of Environment the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET), Ogoniland.
Rivers State. Environmental scholars and professionals, including FUET Vice Chancellor, Professor Chinedu Mmon, and other Fellows of the Society graced the event.
