The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and arraignment of a woman, identified as Mrs Chisom Okonkwo, for allegedly making false claims that her husband defiled their two daughters.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the case began after Chisom, 29, lodged a complaint at the Emene Police Division, alleging that her husband, Mr. Okonkwo Ozioma, had been sexually assaulting their five- and three-year-old daughters and threatening to kill her if she exposed him.
However, Ndukwe said a detailed police investigation proved the claims to be untrue. It was discovered that during the periods in 2024 and 2025 when she alleged the offences occurred, she had travelled with the children to their hometown in Imo State, away from her husband.
Further findings revealed that the couple’s seven-year-old son, in two voluntary handwritten statements, exonerated his father and disclosed that his mother had coached him and his sisters to make the false accusations. This account was supported by video evidence obtained during the investigation.
The police spokesperson added that Mrs. Okonkwo later attempted to withdraw the complaint after realizing that the investigation had exposed the falsehood.
She was subsequently charged before a Magistrate Court in Enugu on a two-count charge of defamation and giving false information. The court granted her bail, and the case has been adjourned for further hearing.
