July 25, 2024.
On assumption of office on June 19, 2024, Chief Brain Gokpa, Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Eleme Local Government Area, embarked on a tour of projects in the council area. He discovered that several completed projects, including the Eleme Motor Park and Agbonchia Townhall, were locked up due to a debt of N175.8 million owed to contractors by previous administrations.
Moved by the people-oriented nature of the projects, Chief Gokpa resolved to clear the debts, enabling the facilities to be put to public use. Consequently, he paid the N175 million debt to the contractors and received the keys to the projects.
Initially scheduled for commissioning on Friday, July 26, 2024, the Eleme Motor Park was commissioned today, amidst reports of hostilities in Agbonchia. The park was handed over to officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Eleme Motor Park.
While addressing newsmen, Chief Gokpa explained that the commissioning of the motor park was expedited due to the security situation in Agbonchia. He also directed the Chief and Community Development Committee of Agbonchia to commence immediate use and maintenance of the Agbonchia Community Townhall, as the council would not spend additional funds on another ceremony.
Chief Gokpa thanked Eleme people and friends of Eleme for their support and assured them of security. He reiterated the need for the people to remain peaceful and calm, in line with Governor Sim Fubara’s directives, even in the face of provocations from detractors.
