Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced that the 33.5-kilometre Elele–Umudioga–Egbeda–Ubimini–Ikiri–Omoku Road has reached 90 percent completion and will be inaugurated in May 2026.
Fubara made this known on Wednesday after inspecting the dual carriageway project, which cuts across Ikwerre, Emohua and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Areas.
The governor said the project would end years of hardship and insecurity experienced by commuters along the route, describing it as critical to unlocking the economic potential of Omoku, popularly known as the “Gas City” of Rivers State.
He noted that the road stands as one of the signature projects of his administration, aimed at expanding the state’s road network and boosting economic activities.
“From my assessment, about 90 per cent of the job is already done, and what is remaining will be delivered before the end of April,” Fubara said.
“I feel very happy because this is not just a road but a signature project of our administration. It is a road corridor that connects Ikwerre, Emohua and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Areas.”
Highlighting the security benefits, the governor recalled the history of criminal activities along the route, including kidnappings, which he said had made the road a “death trap” in the past.
“For those who live and do business in Port Harcourt and Rivers State, you know this road used to be a death trap. Kidnappings and other crimes were common along this corridor.
“I think that with what we have done here today, those issues will be old stories. It won’t occur anymore because security agencies can now easily access the place for any eventuality,” he added.
Fubara also commended the contractor for the quality and pace of work, particularly on the bridge component of the project, expressing confidence that the remaining work would be completed before the end of April ahead of its official inauguration.
