A resident of Elechi Beach in Mile 1 Diobu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State that was gutted by fire over the weekend, has revealed the shocking response he got from officials of the State Fire Service.

The man, in a statement said when the fire started, he immediately drove down to the office of the State Fire Service, for them to come put out the fire, but the officials on ground told him that there was nothing they could do, as they have alerted officials of the Federal Fire Service to go put it out.

The man, said he was shocked at their response and waited for minutes to see if they would intervene but nothing was done.

He said residents struggled on their own to put out the fire, as no Fire Fighter showed up to help.

He also dismissed reports that the fire was caused by activities of illegal oil refiners, adding that it was caused by electric spark from one of the buildings.

He explained that properties worth millions of naira were burnt and that over 200 rooms were razed.
