The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to arraign 23 suspected internet fraudsters on Friday before Justice D. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos.
The suspects are part of a group of 93 individuals arrested at a hotel within the premises of the former President Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL). Investigations indicate that most of the suspects are allegedly involved in internet fraud, identity theft, and impersonation.
The arrests followed a pool party organized by the suspects to celebrate their alleged criminal activities. Originally planned at two other locations, the event was reportedly moved to the OOPL hotel after the suspects became aware of EFCC surveillance, hoping to evade arrest.
The EFCC clarified that the former President’s facility was not a target of the operation and that the suspects were apprehended solely due to their illicit activities. Many have reportedly confessed to involvement in internet-related crimes.
The arraignment of the remaining suspects is expected to follow in the coming days.
