The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified reports surrounding its recent operation at Majesty Estate, NTA Road, Port Harcourt, where 37 suspected internet fraudsters were arrested.
The Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate of the Commission conducted a sting operation on Friday following a distress call from residents who raised alarm over the activities of alleged cybercriminals in the estate.
In a statement, the EFCC explained that operatives visited an apartment flagged by intelligence but were denied entry despite properly identifying themselves and stating their mission. One door was eventually forced open to enable a search, although no arrest or recovery was made from that particular unit.
The Commission dismissed circulating reports and a viral video suggesting harassment or misconduct during the operation, calling them “strange and unwarranted.” It added that many residents commended the Commission for its intervention and the arrests made.
The EFCC emphasized its commitment to professionalism in all operations and assured that any operative found guilty of overstepping legal or ethical boundaries would face appropriate disciplinary measures.
