Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has denied issuing any threat to former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, over his recent visit to the state, clarifying that his comments were misinterpreted.
In a statement issued on Sunday, July 20, 2025, by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the Governor emphasized that his call was for all politically exposed persons and high-profile individuals to notify and seek security clearance before embarking on public engagements in the state.
“As the Chief Security Officer of Edo State, it is Governor Okpebholo’s constitutional duty to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors,” the statement said. “Failure to observe established security protocols creates serious risks not just for the visitor, but also for the public.”
The government cited the increasing cases of attacks and abductions—particularly involving religious leaders, including Catholic priests—as justification for enforcing tighter security measures.
While acknowledging the positive intentions behind public donations to churches and faith-based institutions, the Governor advised that such gestures must be carried out discreetly and with appropriate security consultation to prevent exposing beneficiaries to harm.
Quoting from the Bible, the government referenced Matthew 6:2–4 to stress the value of giving in private, describing the advice as both scripturally sound and relevant in today’s security context.
The statement also dismissed comparisons between Okpebholo and Obi, pointing out that “Governor Okpebholo is not Peter Obi, who, as Governor of Anambra State, detained Nasir El-Rufai during a visit.”
The Edo State Government warned against attempts to politicize the issue, stating it would not allow activities that could compromise public safety. It reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a secure and inclusive environment for all Nigerians, provided security procedures are duly observed.
