ABUJA – The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on Wednesday upheld the election of Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), rejecting a petition seeking to nullify the poll.
In a unanimous ruling, the three-member panel, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, declined to order a fresh election in Edo State, stating that the petitioners—Accord Party (AP) and its governorship candidate—failed to substantiate their claims.
The tribunal ruled that the petition lacked merit, emphasizing that the burden of proof rested on the petitioners. Despite alleging electoral malpractice and violations of the Electoral Act in the September 21, 2024 election, they failed to present credible evidence to support their claims.
Declaring the petition incompetent, the panel dismissed all requests for annulment, solidifying Okpebholo’s victory in the governorship race.
