The Department of State Services (DSS) has summoned activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, over what it described as a “false and malicious” social media post targeting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a letter dated September 7, 2025, signed by Uwem Davies on behalf of the DSS Director-General, Sowore was instructed to retract his comment on X (formerly Twitter) and issue a public apology within one week.
The agency accused Sowore of calling the President a “criminal” in a post on August 26, 2025, in which he allegedly mocked Tinubu’s remarks on corruption made during a visit to Brazil. The DSS described the post as “repugnant, derogatory and capable of inciting public disturbance.”
The letter stated that Sowore must publish an unequivocal retraction on the same platform, issue apologies in at least two national newspapers and two television stations, and submit a representation to DSS headquarters in Abuja or via email.
The United States Embassy in Abuja was also copied on the communication, according to the agency.
