Tension broke out on Monday morning at a private school located on an avenue off Udara Junction, along Egbelu/Ogbogoro Road, after a male tricycle (Keke) driver was caught with a Senior Secondary School 2 female student in a compromising position during school hours.
Activist Prince Wiro said the school’s teachers apprehended the driver and the girl, bundled them into the school premises, and subjected the man to a beating before police operatives intervened. The timely arrival of the Rivers State Police Command reportedly prevented the situation from escalating and saved the driver from sustaining more serious injuries.
He reminded the public that under the Child Rights Law in Rivers State, minors below 18 years cannot legally give consent to sexual relationships. “The excuse that a child under 18 accepted advances is not recognized by law,” he stressed.
He, however, faulted the school’s approach, noting that while the driver should face the law, the teachers acted unlawfully by assaulting him instead of immediately handing him over to the police.
