The Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State University (RSU), Dr. Harcourt Whyte has reacted to the increase of fine for hate speech from N500,000 to N5m by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Dr. Whyte, in a statement yesterday said the increase is simply a systematic way to stifle freedom of speech in the country.

He said the government cannot give the people freedom of expression and then turn around to block them from doing so. Dr. Whyte stated that if someone makes a comment and you feel it is hate speech, the best thing is to seek redress in court.

He furthermore called on those in the print media to secure the services of professionals to handle their jobs as it will help address some of these challenges.
