A former Commissioner for Information in Rivers State, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, has cautioned journalists against excessive dependence on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their work, particularly in investigative reporting.
Semenitari gave the warning during a two-day capacity-building workshop for female journalists in Rivers State, organised by the Step-Up for Women in Journalism Initiative (SWIJ) in Port Harcourt. The training was held in partnership with the Common Ground Journalism Forum, with funding support from the European Union, Search for Common Ground Nigeria, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, and the Media Career Development Network (MCDN).
Addressing participants, the former commissioner noted that while AI could serve as a useful tool to improve journalism, it must not substitute human intellect and critical thinking.
She further urged female journalists to consciously invest in continuous self-development and capacity building to stay relevant and adapt to evolving technological trends in the media industry.
