The Rivers State House of Assembly has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to declare a state of emergency on primary and secondary education following alarming reports on the condition of public schools across the state.
The resolution was reached after the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Hon. Igwe Aforji, presented a report detailing widespread decay in public schools, including the vandalism and looting of facilities at Township School, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
Presenting the findings, Hon. Aforji expressed concern over the deteriorating infrastructure and urged the House to compel the state government to take urgent action to salvage the education sector.
Speaking after deliberations, Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, described the situation in the schools as “sad,” particularly lamenting the shortage of teachers in public institutions. He stressed the need for immediate intervention to restore standards.
The Assembly adjourned plenary to Thursday, December 4 for more deliberations.
