DCLM Daily Manna 2026: DCLM Daily Manna 26 January 2026: Knowing the Joyful Sound
Text: Psalm 89:15–18 (KJV)
Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound!
They walk, O Lord, in the light of Your countenance.
16 In Your name they rejoice all day long,
And in Your righteousness they are exalted.
17 For You are the glory of their strength,
And in Your favor our horn is exalted.
18 For our shield belongs to the Lord,
And our king to the Holy One of Israel.
KEY VERSE: Psalm 89:15
“Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance.”
In 1953, James Watson, an American scientist, and his English colleague, Francis Crick, discovered the double-helix structure of DNA. They immediately realised that they had uncovered the blueprint of life itself.
It is said that Watson ran into a pub shouting, “We have discovered the secret of life!” You can imagine the overwhelming joy of being the first to possess such world-changing knowledge.
However, there is a joy far greater than the excitement of any scientific breakthrough. This joy is described in today’s Bible text as “the joyful sound.” Blessed indeed are those who know this sound.
Some Bible scholars believe that this psalm was written during Israel’s captivity in Babylon. When the psalmist speaks of the joyful sound, he likely reflects nostalgically on the deeply joyful worship of God in Israel.
Such moments were filled with the manifest presence of God, sacred ordinances, and the sounding of trumpets and melodies that called God’s people into His presence. Those who truly know—not merely hear—this joyful sound are privileged to walk continually in the light of God’s favour.
The knowledge that the Almighty God is favourable toward us is itself a source of profound joy. When we enter into a redemptive covenant with God, we partake of a joy that endures beyond circumstances.
Unlike fleeting happiness, this joy sustains us even in times of crisis. We rejoice in God’s righteousness—not our own, which the Scriptures describe as filthy rags. God becomes our strength, courage, and confidence. He is our defence and our King, and to Him alone belongs all the glory.
Sadly, many people today are familiar only with carnally entertaining religious sounds, while others are consumed by the noise of materialism. Yet, the highest privilege anyone can have is to know the joyful sound that comes from pure and sincere worship of the Almighty God.
Those who have not repented and placed their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Saviour cannot experience this joy.
What could be more desirable than to dwell “in the secret place of the Most High” and to “abide under the shadow of the Almighty”? This is the blessed portion of those who truly know the joyful sound.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
God inhabits the praises and true worship of His saints.
