KEY VERSE: Numbers 10:9 “And if ye go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you, then ye shall blow an alarm with the trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before the LORD your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies.”
TEXT: Numbers 10:1-10 (KJV)
And the Lord said to Moses,
2 Make two trumpets of silver; of hammered or turned work you shall make them, that you may use them to call the congregation and for breaking camp.
3 When they both are blown, all the congregation shall assemble before you at the door of the Tent of Meeting.
4 And if one blast on a single trumpet is blown, then the princes or leaders, heads of the tribes of Israel, shall gather themselves to you.
5 When you blow an alarm, the camps on the east side [of the tabernacle] shall set out.
6 When you blow an alarm the second time, then the camps on the south side shall set out. An alarm shall be blown whenever they are to set out on their journeys.
7 When the congregation is to be assembled, you shall blow [the trumpets in short, sharp tones], but not the blast of an alarm.
8 And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets, and the trumpets shall be to you for a perpetual statute throughout your generations.
9 When you go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresses you, then blow an alarm with the trumpets, that you may be remembered before the Lord your God, and you shall be saved from your enemies.
10 Also in the day of rejoicing, and in your set feasts, and at the beginnings of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and your peace offerings; thus they may be a remembrance before your God. I am the Lord your God.
There was a story about a Scottish Highlands widow whose only son sends a monthly letter. The old lady was bitter that her son in Australia did not care about her. One day, a visitor asked what her son had done for her. She replied, “He writes to me regularly, once a month, but only sends me a little picture with his letter.” That “little picture” was actually her monthly upkeep money, but her ignorance of the worth of the currency left her wallowing in poverty.
Equally, in our text, God made provisions for Israel, His chosen people that looked simple but had the potency to command His mighty intervention on their behalf. The Lord instructed them to make two silver trumpets that would be used for special occasions – to order their movement, to assemble the congregation, to encourage their armies in battle and on festive moments. These trumpets were to be handled only by the two priests (the sons of Aaron). However, the nation’s history showed that they often abandoned God’s provision and chased vanity until their enemies defeated them. But whenever they moved at God’s command, victory and success came their way.
Believers are privileged to have guiding and shielding instruments such as God’s word, the name of Jesus, His atoning blood and prayer, which, when utilised, open the door to great possibilities. The challenge is not whether there is enough to go around everyone but if His children will tap these resources in their hour of need.
To see God manifest His power on our behalf, we must obey His word, remain in faith, pray fervently and continue to sound the alarm of the gospel message to the unconverted. If we do these, no power will stand against us.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Move at God’s pace and get to the right destination at the right time.
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 2 Samuel 12-14
