DCLM Daily Manna 2023: DCLM Daily Manna 14 July 2023: Like a Palm Tree
Key Verse: “And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.” (Judges 1:20)
TEXT: Judges 1:9-20 (KJV)
And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.
10 And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
11 And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjathsepher:
12 And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
14 And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?
15 And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.
16 And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.
18 Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof.
19 And the Lord was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.
20 And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.

The palm tree is one of God’s natural gifts to man that symbolizes strength, victory, triumph, peace, fruitfulness and durability. When the Bible talks about the upright, they are sometimes likened to the palm tree, because of the versatility and nobility of the plant. There are few forest species in existence that combine these qualities all at once. Palm trees easily outlive several generations of men.
The Lord made His servant Caleb to endure like a palm tree. After his unwavering walk with the Lord in the books of Numbers and Joshua, we find him again in the book of Judges. With his faith in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob still intact after the Lord Himself had testified to his fidelity, Caleb yet enjoyed the fulfilment of divine promises. In his old age, his strength did not wane. He laboured in battles for God’s people, won Hebron for Judah and “expelled thence the three sons of Anak”.
To possess the stability that withstands the vicissitudes of life and ministry, we must be as fruitful, sturdy and unmovable as the palm tree. “The righteous (those who believe in the Lord and obey His laws) shall flourish like the palm tree… They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; To shew that the LORD is upright…”
Today, the kingdom of God urgently needs more Calebs. There are more “Hebrons” to be won; and there are several thousands of the children of Anak to be ousted for the power of Satan to be demolished. We must go to God to fill us with “another spirit” that would qualify us for lasting work for Him that would stand through the ages.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Only the righteous can be gifted the elastic energy to displace the enemies of God.
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 1 Chronicles 5-8
