KEY VERSE: “Now in the twelfth month… when the king’s commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them, though it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that hated them.” Esther 9:1
Text: Esther 9:1-11 (KJV)
1 Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar, on the thirteenth* day of the same, when the king’s commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them, (though it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that hated them;)
2 The Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, to lay hand on such as sought their hurt: and no man could withstand them; for the fear of them fell upon all people.
3 And all the rulers of the provinces, and the lieutenants, and the deputies, and officers* of the king, helped the Jews; because the fear of Mordecai fell upon them.
4 For Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and his fame went out throughout all the provinces: for this man Mordecai waxed greater and greater.
5 Thus the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and slaughter, and destruction, and did what they would unto those that hated them.
6 And in Shushan the palace the Jews slew and destroyed five hundred men.
7 And Parshandatha, and Dalphon, and Aspatha,
8 And Poratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha,
9 And Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vajezatha,
10 The ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews, slew they; but on the spoil laid they not their hand.
11 On that day the number of those that were slain in Shushan the palace was brought before the king.
History is largely a record of the extraordinary events in the affairs of man. It observes unexpected outcomes that appear to run against the normal course of play. There are moving stories, for instance, of how suddenly a military force on the winning streak fails to sustain the steam and begins to experience huge losses. There are individual cases in sports where, after a seemingly unassailable start, the athlete becomes complacent and loses the race to a less expected contestant.
One of the most celebrated of such reversals in recorded history is the one orchestrated by God in the book of Esther. It speaks of the remarkable change in fortunes between the Jews and their hosts in the kingdom of Persia and Media. Following an irreversible decree of the death sentence on all the Jews in the provinces, these descendants of Jacob were marked for judicial extermination at the hands of the landowners. But God intervened and turned the tables on their enemies, as He caused the promulgation of a new law that empowered them to defend themselves against their adversaries.
There is a saying, “It is not over until it is over”. The spiritual perspective of this truism is that those who believe in the Lord understand Him as the One who calls the shots in human affairs. So, no matter the manipulations of the devil and his agents, as they serve God faithfully, He will always have the last say.
God’s final say, which cannot be overruled by any power, is “Yea and Amen” to our victory over all circumstances, our good health, prosperity and joy. Whatever the enemies of God may have conceived against His people, the Lord will definitely turn the table against them. Just rest in Him!
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God’s providence works in favour of His people and ill to their foes.
