KEY VERSE:- “Give ear, O LORD, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications.” – (Psalm 86:6)
TEXT: Psalm 86:1-10 (KJV)
Bow down thine ear, O Lord, hear me: for I am poor and needy.
2 Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee.
3 Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily.
4 Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
5 For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.
6 Give ear, O Lord, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications.
7 In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me.
8 Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works.
9 All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy name.
10 For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.

Matthew Henry, a 15th century nonconformist minister of God, once said: “The best self-preservation is to commit ourselves to God’s keeping and by faith and prayer to make our Creator our Preserver”. This axiom applies to all believers, for God alone has the power to deliver His children from all troubles. But this requires believers to earnestly seek Him in prayers of faith.
David, the King of Israel, exhibited absolute dependence on God as evident in today’s text. He passionately pleaded for God’s compassion and mercy because he was poor and needy. He also pleaded with God to show him love and grant all his supplications because he trusted only in Him who brought the Israelites out of the land of Egypt.
He also asked for mercy because he was completely dependent upon God. He further cried all day long because he would not rely on any other god or person for assistance. He anchored his plea to the graciousness of God, knowing that He is good and ready to forgive. He finally recognised that God was Creator and Master over all nations.
As great as his challenges were, however, David never allowed them to weigh him down. Rather, he approached the throne of grace in faith and total surrender to God’s will. Concerned about diverse issues that bothered him, he exhibited faith in the infinite power of God to forgive his iniquities, preserve his soul, stir up exceeding joy in his heart and show him mercy. He thus expressed confidence that God would answer him when he calls.
David’s plea for help graphically presents a useful model of prayer for all believers facing troubles. It shows his helplessness and reveals his confidence in the faithfulness of God to grant his requests during this time of crises. It finally shows the need for believers to always present their requests to God with reference to maintaining His standard of holiness. Call on Him today and He will answer you.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The best direction to look in time of trouble is up!
