KEY VERSE: “And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.” – (Mark 10:48)
TEXT: Isaiah 26:12-21
Lord, You will establish peace for us,
For You have also done all our works in us.
13 O Lord our God, masters besides You
Have had dominion over us;
But by You only we make mention of Your name.
14 They are dead, they will not live;
They are deceased, they will not rise.
Therefore You have punished and destroyed them,
And made all their memory to perish.
15 You have increased the nation, O Lord,
You have increased the nation;
You are glorified;
You have expanded all the borders of the land.
16 Lord, in trouble they have visited You,
They poured out a prayer when Your chastening was upon them.
17 As a woman with child
Is in pain and cries out in her pangs,
When she draws near the time of her delivery,
So have we been in Your sight, O Lord.
18 We have been with child, we have been in pain;
We have, as it were, brought forth wind;
We have not accomplished any deliverance in the earth,
Nor have the inhabitants of the world fallen.
19 Your dead shall live;
Together with my dead body they shall arise.
Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust;
For your dew is like the dew of herbs,
And the earth shall cast out the dead.
20 Come, my people, enter your chambers,
And shut your doors behind you;
Hide yourself, as it were, for a little moment,
Until the indignation is past.
21 For behold, the Lord comes out of His place
To punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity;
The earth will also disclose her blood,
And will no more cover her slain.
Read yesterday’s Daily Manna here
It went viral on social media recently about a President in one of the Asian countries who reportedly said “if there is anyone who has any evidence that there is God, such a person should come and prove it to me”. While such statements seem ridiculous, it must not be lost on us that there are people that really do not believe God exists. The Bible of course says of such people – ”The fool hast said in his heart, there is no God” (Psalm 14:1). However, there are some who though they say they believe in God, deliberately do things offensive to Him, whilst others are just “at ease in Zion” and are too comfortable to obey God.
Peace can only be ordained when people trust and obey God. For those who wander away, “other lords” will rule over them with all the afflictions that go with it. But it is wisdom to know that the idols of the heathen are dead gods. In affliction men are bound to cry unto God who mercifully hears and delivers. The passage also talks about bodily resurrection of the dead.
The gospel message is a two-edged sword. There is mercy and forgiveness for those who repent, whilst judgment awaits the impenitent (Luke 13:3). The modern-day “positive” gospel preachers try to present God as always merciful and thereby indulgent. They do not emphasise like David that “if thou seek him, he will be found of thee, but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off forever” (1 Chronicles 28:9).
No doubt, Good is longsuffering and merciful but He is also a Judge. Israel enjoyed peace and prosperity as long as they obeyed Him but suffered adversity and misery when they abandoned Him. Proponents of “eternal security” must understand the great disservice they do to God and men. If a believer dies in sin, he goes to hell. That is the truth.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Stay out of trouble by doing God’s will.
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Psalm 44-50
